Lot No. 20

Ashanti, Ghana: A stool of a high-status individual.

Ashanti, Ghana: A stool of a high-status individual. - Tribal Art

A typical stool of the Ashanti of Ghana. Made of hard, light-coloured slightly red wood. With characteristic wide seat and base. Both seat and base have three steps. The central support is shaped in the form of an oval-round ring, with an inset, circular, central lattice on both sides. Both ‘lattice circles' are partly hollowed inside (hollowed from below). The ring of the central support carries on its exterior four jagged appendages on each side. For the Ashanti in general, stools are viewed as ‘seat of the soul’ of the owner. And such stools with their complicated form belonged only to individuals of very high status or of the royal family. The present stool shows a fine, shiny usage patina and only minimal, age-related damage (some minor cracks, small pieces broken off). H: c. 33 cm (border), W: 50 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Lit.: 'Afrikanische Sitze' by Sandro Bocola, ill. 35, 36, 37, 38, and photos on pp. 24, 31, 32, 44 and 45.
