Emanating great charm and intimate affection, this previously unpublished painting is an excellent example of Coypel’s talent for visually rendering emotions. A member of a multitudinous family of artists, Coypel was considered one of the leading artists of his period. He not only painted large-sized historic paintings, but also genre paintings in cabinet format. In 1746, Coypel was appointed ‘premier peintre du roi’ and in 1747 became first director of the Académie, an office he held until his death.
