We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution of the present painting.
The portraitist and still life painter Herman Verelst was the brother of Simon Verelst. He executed numerous portraits, but only a small number of still lifes are attributable to him. Further flower pieces by his hand are probably concealed in the oeuvre of his brother Simon.
