Jan van der Vaart

Jan van der Vaart - Old Master Paintings

(Haarlem 1647–1721 London)
Portrait of William III of England oil on canvas, 108 x 88 cm, framed

After the death of Willem Wissing, Jan van der Vaart, who was first and foremost known in England as a leading mezzotint artist, took over the latter’s workshop and continued to paint portraits of the royal family and the aristocracy.

William III, who served as governor of the Netherlands between 1672 and 1702, was married to a daughter of the Stuart King James II. In 1688 he landed in England with his army and deposed his father-in-law. By swearing on the Declaration of Rights of 1689, William agreed to the constitutionally prescribed foundation of his crown, which had become an instrument of the state – an essential step in England’s unwritten constitutional tradition.
