(Leuven circa 1535–1597 Frankfurt am Main)
Mountainous landscape with figures in front of an iron foundry
oil on copper, 19 x 28.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Dr. Einar Perman (1893–1976) collection, Stockholm;
with Pieter de Boer, Amsterdam (1965);
sale Sotheby’s, London, 7th July 2005, lot 122 (as ‘Lucas van Valckenborch’);
Private collection, Sweden;
sale Dorotheum, Vienna, 21st April, 2010, lot 329 (as ‘Attributed to Lucas van Valckenborch’)

Literature:
A. Wied, Nachträge zu Lucas und Marten van Valckenborch, in: Jahrbuch des Kunsthistorischen Museums, vol. 6, 2004, fig. 19 (as attributed to Lucas van Valckenborch or workshop)

We are grateful to Alexander Wied for examining the present painting in the original. He expressed the opinion that it is either an autograph by Valckenborch – probably the second version of a lost painting – or a workshop replica. According to Wied, the high quality of the figures suggests that it may be an autograph work.
