1951 Daimler DB 18 Sports Special Drophead Coupé

1951 Daimler DB 18 Sports Special Drophead Coupé - CLASSIC CARS and Automobilia

The Daimler Motor Company was founded in 1896 by Frederick R. Simms in Coventry. Five years earlier, he had acquired a license to build fast combustion engines from Gottlieb Daimler. The DB 18 was introduced right before Britain’s entry into the war. As early as 1946, production of a redesigned version of the 2,5 litre model resumed. At the 1948 London Motor Show Daimler presented the matching sporty convertible. Barker & Co. created a modern aluminium body with flowing lines and an unusual sideway seat in the back. By 1952, Daimler manufactured 608 units of this model.

The present Daimler was brought to Germany from Britain in 2009 by its owner. The convertible’s appealing condition contributed to the buyer’s decision and remains impressive, though its restoration is said to have taken place back in 1987. Wood and leather still evoke the nobility of a British luxury car; helped by lacquer and chrome. Also typically British, numerous MOT certificates and receipts from the car’s early days. Other major maintenance included: extensive engine revision in November 1999 at approx. 53,500 mls. In December 2014 the rear suspension was replaced, the brakes overhauled, and the steering adjusted. This service history guarantees that the car’s technical condition matches its appearance. One might also mention that this Daimler was one of the select participants in the Concours d´Elegance at Ludwigsburg in 2010.
Such a DB 18 Sports Special always offers a fascinating alternative to its German namesakes of the same period!
