1973 Opel GT 1900 A-L

1973 Opel GT 1900 A-L - CLASSIC CARS and Automobilia

At the IAA 1965, Opel presented a sensational experimental vehicle. After further development, it became commercially available as the GT in September 1968. Its sleek shape caught the eye and ensured racy performance based on a regular serial-produced engine. “Only flying is more fun,” an ad promised - both things equally out of reach for many at that time. The merely average quality of the bodywork reduced the number of such cars dramatically over the year making finding a fine model of this time a matter of luck and patience!

The present Opel GT was - judging by its chassis number - one of the very last built. According to a copy of the single vehicle approval dating to 2010 it was first registered on 5 October 1977 in Lower Austria. What appears to be at a first glance a GT/J, with its typical black hang-on parts, on closer inspection is revealed to be a 1900 A-L. In the course of an earlier restoration, the GT was altered to match the appearance of the more affordable entry-level model which replaced the 1100 in March 1971. Carpeting, clock or chromed tank cover did not feature in the more Spartan GT/J. Overall the car is in solid condition; the ATS-wheel rims with 185e tires underline its sporty appearance. However the most important thing is that there at not many GTs left that have not succumbed to rust of home-depot tuning orgies. This is one of a few!
