Peter van Halen
(Antwerp 1612–1687)
The Triumph of Galatea
oil on copper, 16.5 x 24 cm, framed
We are grateful to Luuk Pijl for confirming the attribution of the present work on the basis of a photograph (written communication).
Peter van Halen is a rare artist who was forgotten for a long time. That he was highly appreciated by his contemporaries is underlined by the fact that he was elected chairman of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. Van Halen frequently referred to compositions by famous contemporaries for inspiration. In the present work, which is extremely delicately painted and displays a keen sense of detail, several passages draw inspiration from a copper engraving by Philippe Thomassin based on a drawing by Jacopo Zucchi.
