Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Il Sassoferrato

Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Il Sassoferrato - Old Master Paintings

(Sassoferrato 1609–1685 Rome)
Madonna in Prayer
oil on unlined canvas, 48.6 x 37.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
European private collection

François Mace de Lepinay, who is preparing the forthcoming monograph on Sassoferrato, has confirmed the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.

The present Madonna at prayer is a version of one of Sassoferrato’s most celebrated compositions. It depicts the Madonna bust length, with her head slightly inclined, gaze lowered, and hands folded in prayer. The composition exhibits vibrant colours and fine details such as the textured shades of the hair. The simplicity of the composition and sobriety of the palette are qualities that established these depictions of the Madonna among the most effective and recognisable religious images of the 17th century.

After his training in the workshop of the Bolognese painter Domenichino the artist was mainly influenced by Guido Reni and Raphael. The majority of Sassoferrato’s works were intended for private devotion and the artist’s popularity in the mid-17th century was influenced by the interest in Mariology.
