The Adoration of the Magi
oil on panel, 69 x 53 cm, framed
The present painting, which can be assigned to the circle of the Master of 1518 (Jan van Dornicke), seems to have functioned as the central panel of a triptych. The Antwerp artists of the early 16th century had specialised in this type of painting, supplying buyers throughout Europe with their works through a cleverly thought-out transportation system and with the aid of a network of dealers. Contemporary Spanish inventories list numerous triptychs and devotional pictures imported from Flanders, many of which have survived. Comparable works can also be found in Northern Europe.
Till-Holger Borchert, whom we thank for his kind assistance, recognises a remote relationship between the present painting and works by the so-called Pseudo-Bles, a painter who belonged to the group of Antwerp Mannerists and was active in Antwerp around 1520.
