she sits semi-naked on a tree stump crowned with a vine garland, her right hand leaning on the branch of the tree, her left hand hiding a quiver, Cupid stands before her and begs her for it, biscuit porcelain, to the reverse of tree trunk impressed B. Bernstamm, Paris 1908, word mark SEVRES, dating from Third Republic, and S 1928 DN, DN meaning ‘paté dure nouvelle’, to one side G. B., circular stepped base, height 68 cm, Ø 33 cm, small chips to rim of base with small repairs, to the underside short firing crack, Sèvres, France, 1928, model by 1908 (Ru)

Lit.: Thieme-Becker, III, p.471, Leopold Bernhard Bernstamm, b. Riga 20.4.1859, sculptor, active in Paris as director of the Musée Grevin. Started his career as pupil of Prof. Jensen in St Petersburg, from 1873 at its academy, in 1884 pupil of Rivalti in Florence, in 1885 of Mercier in Paris, important portraitist. In 1906 his monument to the comedic writer, Ed. Pailleron was unveiled in Monceau Park in Paris.
