porcelain, body with gilt and brown rim, gilt-painted impasto rosettes, vases with leaf tendrils framed with laurel stems on a white ground, framed by gilt arched frieze with shabraques on a chamois-coloured ground, neck with burnished and matt gilt rims, burnished gilt well with oval reserve, within which polychrome-painted landscape and The Rape of Ganymede after Correggio, below which a dog barking, encompassed by a burnished gilt border on a matt gilt band, to the centre signed L. Herr, Ø 25 cm, gilt ground slightly rubbed, Vienna Imperial Manufactory, underglaze blue shield mark, year number 1805, Sorgenthal era, turner no. 32 Silvester Gurber 1804-1820 (Ru)

Lorenz (Laurenz) Herr, son of Johann Herr and brother of Claudius Herr, figure painter at the Manufactory, b. Vienna 1787, history, landscape and portrait painter, from 1804-1828 and later at the Viennese Manufactory. Entered the Viennese Academy as a 12-year old and was awarded 3 Gundel Prizes, from 1804 at the Manufactory until 1810 painting in an antiquising style, examples such as dinner platters depicting Aristagoras and Cleomenes, Nessus and Dejanira, Achilles and Chiron, 1812, déjeuners, plates, and smaller items with figural images, later portraits such as Emperor Franz, Empress Karoline, Empress Marie-Luise, the Duke of Reichstadt, numerous images of regents from the House of Habsburg, the family of Lord Gordon, during the Congress era, European monarchs, princes, princesses, generals and statesmen, his speciality: the imitation of ancient onyx cameos, after the originals in the Imperial Cabinet of Antiquities, such as ‘Gemma Augustea’.
His ledger lists works made from 1806-1831 and 1833, and includes the very high prices he achieved for them. Founded his own lithographical academy in 1819/1820 which existed until 1835. On 10 December 1831, “Lorenz Herr failed to attend the Manufactory as invited, [despite being told] that the Empress wanted a dish decorated with the Archduke Franz’s children.”
