Pair of small Italian stools or sgabelli,
Naples, end of the 18th century. Serpentine and fluted hardwood stools, later painted beige with gold, with a continuous frieze of arched forms. 54 x 54 x 40 cm. With later upholstery, some ageing and wear. (DOC)
This pair of stools is part of a finely executed group made for the Neapolitan court. Some of these pieces were located at the "Reggia di Caserta". The Baroque royal palace of Caserta, some 40 km north of Naples, is one of the largest castles in Europe, and was built as the residence of the Bourbons ruling over the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily.
