Guglielmo Ciardi
(Treviso 1842–1917 Venice)
Chioggia, signed Ciardi, oil on canvas, 36.5 x 65.5 cm, framed, (GG)
The setting for the present painting is Chioggia a seafaring island in the Venetian lagoon. The artist has depicted Chioggia at his very best on a calm day.Venice was a constant source of inspiration for Ciardi throughout his life. The present lot can be dated in the 1880s when the artist described the lagoon as a calm sea.He positions numerous fishing boats in the center of the composition.Light and harmony of color are combined with interest in the everyday activities of the fishermen. We can imagine them returning with their catch of the day. The tower dell’Orlogio di Sant’Andrea is visible in the background. It is a military construction dating back to the Roman era and is approximately 30 meters high. For the rest of his life the artist stayed in Venice where he sought to render the atmosphere of the lagoon and the lives of the city’s working inhabitants such as the fishermen and the gondoliers
