Lot No. 41

Kopecký Vladimír (Svojanov 1931)

Miracle
pasted panes of glass, sign. and dat. V. Kopecký 2007, 49.5 x 28.5 x 8 cm

The work is from the author’s studio

Exhibited: Vladimír Kopecký, Galerie Havelka, Prague, 2011, Vladimír Kopecký, Galerie Aspekt, Brno 2011

After studying at glassmaking secondary schools in Nový Bor and Kamenický Šenov, he graduated from prof. Kaplický’s studio in the VŠUP in Prague in 1956. His first significant success was at EXPO 58 in Brussels, where he received a gold medal. Vladimír Kopecký is not only a glass artist, but also a painter, and both of these skills complement one another. An important part of his work are also glass elements in architecture. These monumental works inspired the author in his more intimate works - surface lines from arranged flat panes of glass, then drawn and sanded with the same principle as the object on offer, Planks. “Their plainness has the peace of a precise order within it, but also the coldness of lonely dehumanization”

In Vladimír Kopecký’s work there is a fascinating contrast between the various dimensions of his works. In the 1960s, he coined the term “ugly” glass - he created brutal objects out of glass, rails and bricks, on which he wildly poured streams of fiery colors. In contrast, in his later work, he let the glass stay minimally clean and clear, pasted into a simple geometric shape. As the author himself says: “I like absolute silence and cosmic storms” The gallery work on offer, Miracle, is this absolute silence.
