Josef Ritter von Führich

Josef Ritter von Führich - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Kratzau 1800-1876 Vienna) The enthroned Madonna surrounded by the archangels Gabriel and Michael, and by Adam and Eve, preliminary study for the painting "Ave-Eva" (1856), pencil on paper, 39,5 x 51,5 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance: Private Collection, Austria.

The present drawing is a preliminary draft for the painting "Ave-Eva" (Oil on panel, 39,5 x 52,5 cm) by Führich in the Neue Galerie of the Museum of Hessen in Kassel (Inv. Nr. 1875/1407).
The mother of God is seated on a stone throne and is holding the Infant Jesus on her laps. To her left Archangel Gabriel is kneeling, holding a lily in his hand, behind him Archangel Michael is standing with his sword and a helmet. Adam and Eve are visible at the right margin. They are kneeling at the Madonna’s feet. The figures of Archangel Michael and of Adam have not been executed in the painting. Another preliminary drawing for the painting, which is closer in detail to the painting than the present drawing also lacks the landscape and is preserved in the Albertina (Inv. Nr. 25465, pencil on paper, 36, 1 x 51,3 cm). There is a depiction of the Mary as „Queen of Heaven“ in Führich‘s woodcut illustration for the „Imitation of Christ“ of Thomas A. Kempis. Her head and head posture are identical with the one in the painting in Kassel.

Literature: H. v. Wörndle, Joseph von Führichs Werke, Wien 1914, p. 115, No. 612; P. F. Schmidt, Joseph von Führich religiöse Kunst, Berlin 1920, Fig. 19; E. Guldan, Eva und Maria. Eine Antithese als Bildmotiv, Graz/Köln 1969, p. 96, No. 102, Abb. 102.
