Lot No. 71

Attributed to Laurent de La Hyre

Attributed to Laurent de La Hyre - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(1606-1656), The Lamentation, inscribed "La Hyre", red chalk, on laid paper, 28,9 x 20,4 cm, laid down on support, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance: Collection Achille Ryhiner-Delon, Basel (Lugt 2164); Collection Theodor Falkeisen (1768-1814) & Johann Friedrich Huber (1766-1832), Basel (Lugt 1008); Collection Karl Ewald Hasse (1810-1901), Leipzig (Lugt 860); Auction C. G. Boerner, Leipzig, 9th/10th May 1930, Lot 553; Private Collection, Italy.

According to the opinion of Prof. Alastair Laing the present drawing could be the final draft for an etching by La Hyre with the same theme. The drawing differs from the ecthing only in a few details such as the nails in the foreground and the beam behind Mary. Another sketch of the same composition is preserved in the Grafischen Sammlung of the Hessisches Landesmuseums in Darmstadt (Inv. HZ 107).

Literature: Compare. Mechthild Haas, Federica Mancini (Eds.), Französische Zeichnungen des 16., 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts im Hessischen Landesmuseum Darmstadt, Darmstadt 2007, Cat. 90, p. 140-141.
