Giovanni Francesco Barbieri gen. il Guercino
(Cento 1591-1666 Bologna) Study of a seated young man in half figure raising the left hand upwards, c. 1640, black chalk, on laid paper, 23 x 17 cm, laid down on support, mounted, unframed, (Sch)
With a certificate by Dr. Nicolas Turner.
Literature: Compare: D. Mahon/ N. Turner, The Drawings of Guercino at Windsor Castle, Cambridge 1989, Nr. 115, 117.
According to Dr. Nicolas Turner the drawing is datable on the basis of stylistic features to c. 1640 when the artist had reached the climax of his „classical“ phase. In this time he frequently preferred black chalk and oiled charcoal. Two comparable drawings „The rape of the Sabine women“ and „Atlas“ are preserved in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle (Mahon and Turner 1989, Nos. 115, 117). Even though the figure cannot be related to a painting by Guercino the attribution of the sheet to Guercino is according to Mr. Turner without doubt. The drawing may have served as a study for a biblical figure or a saint in an hitherto unknown or an abandoned painting project by the artist.
