Thrace (Southeast Europe), c. 357 x 318 cm, dated 1841, the special style of carpets from this group has exerted a strong fascination on the Balkan states to the effect that kilims with this design still reach the market today, the present large kilim features an almost square-shaped format and is manufactured in slit technique with contour and arched wefts, the upper front displays an inscription with a date which, on the grounds of its colours, must be backdated to the end of the 19th century as the piece’s production date, ends and side edges complete, several large supplementary parts in the red background.
