Tapestry,
Enghien (Netherlands), c. 136 x 379 cm, about 1550, very rare, large-leaf verdure tapestries, such as the present one, have a very special character and often come from Italian and Spanish ecclesiastic estates, which is why they were (erroneously) thought to have been also manufactured in these countries; classical subjects included large, lobed thistle leaves with floral motifs in between, thin-stemmed perennial plants and birds; the present piece is untrimmed and, despite its exceptionally narrow long format, wholly preserved, nonetheless it is heavily worn with several signs of wear in the pattern and repairs, both short sides secured with subsequently supplemented border, all ends mounted on linen band on the back, rings for hanging at the upper end.
