based on a design by Édouard Bénédictus, Paris, 1925/30, knotted wool, asymmetrical knotting, cotton warp, approx. 495 x 390 cm.

purchased at Galerie Jacques de Vos, Paris, in 1990; with invoice and certificate of 9 January 1990 (in photocopy)

Édouard Bénédictus was a versatile and talented artist and as a chemist is known as the inventor of a type of safety glass. As a visual artist he collaborated, among others, with the architect and designer André Groult, for whose interiors he designed carpets and tapestries. In 1925 his designs were presented at the Pavillon de l’Ambassade Française during the Exposition internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. In terms of style, Bénédictus preferred a geometric and Cubist visual vocabulary by which he translated vegetal motifs into abstract patterns.
