Julius Lange was a pupil of the landscape painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer in Düsseldorf, and then of Carl Rottmann in Munich. He settled in Munich in 1858 where he was appointed Bavarian court painter. His mountain landscapes are strongly influenced by Rottmann.
