(Austria, active during the 1860ies) "Jerusalem seen from Mt Skopus", ca. 1860, vintage print, albumen, signed in China ink, 28 x 42,4 cm, on original card, photographer’s stamp and adhesive label with printed title, 47,5 x 61,7 cm, (EK)
Originally from Laibach, Paier was one of many Europeans who settled in the Middle East. He opened a studio on Cairo and some time later another one in Alexandria. Though just a few of his photographs have survived, those that did show that he travelled from Cairo to Jerusalem and that - judging by the pictures’ size - he must have used two cameras, 8 x 10" and 5 x 7"
