A large cinnabar carved lacquer vase
China, Qing dynasty, 19th century
Red carved lacquer over a metal core. In an archaising fanghu form, rectangular in section, the body facetted. The everted foot ornamented with tendrils and meander pattern, the bulbous body carved to show four scenes depicting scholars, their wives and servants in gardens with lake landscapes in the background. To each of the wide faces of the waisted shoulder and neck area, a pair of phoenixes, above which a garden scene framed by tendrils is depicted; curved handles to the narrow faces, each framed by three medallions depicting dragons and tendrils. The four-footed base decorated with curving frames, carved flowers amongst tendrils and meander borders. Vase damaged: lacquer décor to one lower border panel missing, and to another breaking away. Crack to one shoulder. Base with traces of use. Total height: 53 cm. (BA)
