China, Eastern Zhou dynasty, 4rd – 3rd century B.C.
Bronze with gilt and silver inlays, forming an abstract pattern. The upper half hollow, drop-shaped in section, perforated to both sides, the lower half elliptic in shape and cast as one piece. Joining the two sections, a distinctive diagonal band, terminating to one side in a sculptural bird’s head, and to the other side, depicting the head of a bull. Some verdigris. Length: 10.5 cm. (BA)
