A thangka of Buddha Shakyamuni

To the centre of the painting, Shakyamuni seated on a moon cushion and a lotus atop a lion throne, his right hand making the ‘earth-witness’ gesture, attended by his favourite disciples, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, before him an altar table on which are depicted various lucky symbols or objects. In the foreground, a fenced in pond with beings reborn on lotus flowers;flanked by Sitatapatra and Shyamatara. In the heavens, Adibuddha Vajrasattva, attended by Padmasambhava and Padma Gyalpo(?), one of his ight incarnations. To verso, votive inscription in Tibetan. Traditionally mounted. 40.5 x 27 cm. (BA)
