New Guinea, highlands, Baliem valley; Tribe: Dani: A stone axe, wrapped around with braiding.
A stone axe, type: Oblique hatchet, with black, smoothed stone blade and ‘knee handle’ mounting. The shaft, which below is slightly curved, is covered with a thick braid of thin, twisted fibre strings up until its ‘knee’ and including its attachment wrapping. The wickerwork displays a good usage patina.
First half of the 20th century; L: 41 cm (handle); W: 24 cm (above, with blade). (ME)
Provenance: Brought in to the Dani village Esinaga, on the Baliem river in the highlands of New Guinea, acquired directly from the Papua. Austrian Private Collection.
