Mixed lot (2 items): New Guinea Maprik region: Two 'Baba mini’ masks.
The men of the Abelam, Wosera and Arapesh, who live in the Maprik-Hills, north of the Sepik River, constantly compete to bring to harvest the largest yam root. During the great harvest festival, the most beautiful and largest yams are displayed and decorated with such ‘Baba mini’ masks and other ornaments.
Both these yam masks are tightly and carefully plaited, painted with black, white and red earth tones and display an old usage patina. In good condition, no damage.
First half of the 20th century, H: 43 cm and 44 cm. (ME)
