A granary door of the Toba Batak, from Lake Toba, central Sumatra. Old wood, with a large lizard carved in relief.
The lizard symbolises the earth deity, which is responsible for the fertility of the fields. In other words: an obvious symbol for a (full) rice granary. Ein very old piece with usage patina and understandable age-related damage (cracks, some pieces broken off, bolt missing).
19th century or earlier. H: 97 cm. (ME)
