A Burmese Buddha figurine, carved from wood, painted with gold- and red lacquer. The Buddha sits in the ‘earth-touching gesture’ on a high, angular and three-stepped decorated plinth. He is clothed in lavish royal robes and wears a crown on his head, from which a high, slender and round ‘ushnisha’ (flame) decorated with circular notches rises.
Stylistically, this Buddha figurine is the work of the Shan people of east Burma, the largest minority in the modern state of Myanmar.
The sculpture is in good condition, with minor age-related damage: Colour scuffed, fractures on the left and right of the head (there were probably wings attached there, as often seen with Buddha crowns in the Shan style), as well as small pieces broken off on the front of the plinth. The bottom of the plinth is heavily eroded due to age.
Approx. first third of the 20th century; H: 57 cm. (ME)
