The Tibetan ritual trumpet ‘kangling’ is created out of a human femur from a deceased person. Such ceremonial instruments originally hail from the Shamanist Bön religion of Tibet. According to Tantric Buddhism, their sound can drive off evil spirits and summon good ones.
The present ‘kangling’ has a front that is enveloped with black lacquer and decorated with a cuff made of good sheet silver and silver wire. The mouthpiece towards the rear consists of leather enveloped with silver. Toward the front, ceremonial hangings made of colourful silk are attached. This trumpet displays a good, older patina from usage. No damage.
