1: The “ghurra” would have been mounted by a hook on one side to a wall or to a pillar, presenting its flat façade to the room. The whisk would be introduced and kept in position through the hole in the large ring on its other side. By these means, women in Nepal were able to whisk the milk in the butter vat into butter with this simple tool, by hand or using a cord.
This wooden “ghurra” displays attractive relief decoration on its exterior surface: a sun and a half-moon motif opposite each other, as well as plant and vine tendrils decorating the staff between them. L: 29 cm.
2: An old wooden ladle, with curved handle and a floral relief on both sides of the ‘counterweight’. L: 36 cm. Both objects display a very old, partially shiny patina due to long period of usage. Small areas of age-related damage (breaks).
About 1900 to first third of the 20th century. (ME)
