Mixed lot (2 items): Ersari Turkmens (Turkmenistan or northern Afghanistan): Two women’s hats, richly decorated with silver.
1: A high, round Ersari Turkmens girl’s hat; covered in alternating red and green fabric, as well as decorated with an elaborate pattern consisting of small, embossed silver tile-like plates (also including ram’s head motifs!). The lowest row of decorative plates consists of yellow brass. On the inside, the object is lined with green cotton fabric. The hat is crowned with a crest made of silver, with hanging rattles and red-green tassels. These typical crests show that the girl wearing this hat is of a marriageable age. H: 32 cm.
2: A flat, round Ersari Turkmens women’s hat. The wide, lower edge displays very fine embroidery consisting of violet, black, yellow and white silk. The upper section, in the shape of a flat, round cone and the front section above the forehead, with its tip pointed upwards, are - similarly to the first hat - covered with a tight pattern consisting of small, embossed decorative silver plates. The upper silver surface of the cone is interrupted only by three rows of yellow, formally similar, brass plates.
The top of the hat is surmounted by a triangular, polychrome embroidered protective amulet with tassels, hanging from a silver pipette with a light blue glass pearl. H: 14 cm.
Both Turkmen hats: first third to mid-20th century. (ME)
