A typical Yemeni curved dagger ‘Jambiya’, of the ‘northern highlands’ type. Curved iron blade with middle ridge on both sides. The hilt consists of horn (rhinoceros? giraffe?) and is adorned with a brass decorative band, lines of inserted iron pins and with two round ornamental plates made of brass. These embossed brass plates imitate ‘coins’ and depict a ‘Tugra’ (sultan’s mark) from the Ottoman era. The sheath is made of wood and covered in leather, whilst the wide leather belt is cloaked in fabric with typical Yemeni embroidery of polychrome leafy tendrils (the inside is blue). A ‘classical’ piece with very old usage patina and minor age-related damage to the hilt (some pieces broken off) and the leather of the sheath. The belt is probably a recent addition.
Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century; H: 33 cm (curved dagger), W: 106 cm (length of belt). (ME) ASA
