1: An old shortsword with slightly curved, double-edged iron blade with middle ridge, forged in a single piece with a ring-shaped hilt made of iron. Between the blade and the hilt a loose iron ring. Weapons with forged ring hilts such as the present one (also called ‘ring dagger’) exist among the Tiv and the neighbouring tribe of the Jukun in Nigeria. Dyed black. Rare to find in collections! L: 47 cm.
2: A small dance axe with a long curved iron blade without edge. With knee-shaft hafting made of wood, dyed black. Dance axes, such as the present one, are used by numerous tribes in the border region between North Nigeria and North Cameroon in ritual dances (Chamba, Mumuye, Mambila, Montol and others). L: 31 cm (shaft), 34 cm (upper section, with blade).
