Ethiopia: A round leather shield of the Wolayta. - Tribal Art

A small round shield of the Wolayta in South Ethiopia. Made of thick buffalo leather and dyed black. With a robust thick rim and a high central shield boss. The front is etched with all-round lines and hatched spikes, and covered in a rich decoration of brass, copper and aluminium. The seventeen round ornamental brass pieces are buttons taken from uniforms. With two long, decoratively embossed brass pieces and four rectangular copper plates with soldered copper wire. The thirty-one aluminium strips feature an embossed decoration with dot-and-circle motifs. A thick, semicircular leather grip on the back. Good usage patina, no damage.
First half of the 20th century; diameter: 31 cm. (ME)
