A miniature mask of the Eastern Pende, called ‘Phota’, used as a personal protective amulet. These ‘Phota amulets’ are either sewn onto a cap and carried on oneself like other amulets, or they are kept at home.
The present amulet mask is carved in typical Pende form, with a small mouth and pointed chin. It is pierced multiple times on the head, forehead and cheeks and once under the short nose, and shows intense red colouring with redwood powder (as is typical of objects of the Eastern Pende). A visibly old piece, with good usage patina and minor age damage (the eyes chipped).
