Chokwe-Luena (or Lovale), Zambia, Angola: A mask with beard.
A mask made of hard wood, the front side dyed black. Despite featuring the incised tribal mark of the Chokwe people (so-called ‘Cingelyengelye’) on the forehead, the present mask must be attributed to the neighbouring tribe of the Luena (or Lovale) on the grounds of its rough form, its scarification marks and especially because of its typical Luena hairstyle. With an attached cowhide beard and reddish hair.
With minor age-related damage (tears to the upper and lower section of the hairstyle) and with good usage patina on the outside as well as on the inside.
First half of the 20th century; H: 27 cm (without beard). (ME)
