Made of cast bronze. In the kingdoms of the Grassfields in Northwest Cameroon, tobacco pipes with artistically crafted bowls, such as the present one, were the exclusive ownership of high dignitaries and members of secret societies. Such figural pipe bowls were mostly made of clay.
The present pipe bowl belonging to a high dignitary of the Bamum is made of bronze, executed with ‘waste mould’ casting and decorated with a detailed and skillfully carved bird’s head (possibly a rooster or chicken in the act of picking something up).
A beautiful piece with visibly old patina.
Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century; H: 15.3 cm; L: 17 cm.
Provenance: Collection of Prof. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna. (ME)
