The sculpture depicts a woman in a kneeling position, holding a large, deep bowl. The lid of the bowl is carved in the guise of a rooster. Lidded bowls such as the present one were used in the houses of the Yoruba for offering cola nuts to important guests, for bringing sacrificial offerings to the shrines of the gods, or for preserving the sixteen cola nuts for the Ifa oracle.
The present bowl bearer is carved from hard, brown wood and dyed black (with traces of white).
It shows beautiful, old shiny patina and heavy abrasion as a result of protracted use. A few minor tears. Otherwise no damage.
First third of the 20th century; H: 19.3 cm, W: c. 22 cm (the rooster).
