With these spoons the women of the Dan cater for guests who come to the village to attend big ceremonial feasts.
The present Dan spoon, called ‘Po’ or ‘Wakemia’, is carved in hard, brown wood and dyed black. The handle section is shaped in the guise of a female lower abdomen with slightly bent legs. The handle and the lower section of the spoon display an incised linear and geometric decoration.
A piece with especially beautiful, old usage patina and only minor damage (two small cracks to the upper and lower sections of the spoon).
First half of the 20th century; L: 47 cm. (ME)
