Lot No. 21

Lobi, Burkina Faso: A female ancestor figure.

Lobi, Burkina Faso: A female ancestor figure. - Tribal Art

Whilst among the Lobi small figures known as ‘Bateba’ offer a temporary ‘abode’ to invisible spirits (‘Thila’) and receive numerous sacrificial offerings in shrines, relatively large figures such as the present one are likenesses of venerated ancestors. They hardly receive any sacrificial offerings, or none at all.
Hence the present standing female Lobi figure displays no traces of old sacrificial offerings! It consists of hard, heavy wood and displays a perfect Lobi style in both proportion and execution. In very good condition, with old shiny patina and only minor, age-related damage (old cracks to both feet and on the back).
First half of the 20th century; H: 62 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian Private Collection.
