A rare anthroposophic ensemble comprising a table and four chairs,
Germany, c. 1930, solid cherry, the seats upholstered, original fabric covering, table: height 67Â cm, diameter 110Â cm, chairs: height 52Â cm, width 45Â cm, depth 53Â cm, height of seat 50Â cm. (DRAX)
Unique items.
In their sculptural quality and solid wood construction devoid of metal joints, these pieces of furniture are in line with Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophic theories. There exist only few furniture designs that can directly and firmly be attributed to Rudolf Steiner. They include the seats for the festival hall of the Goetheaneum in Dornach (c. 1923). The ensemble offered here is stylistically related to works by Oswald Dubach or Hermann Ranzenberger, both of whom worked for Rudolf Steiner. Other possible authors might be Dubach’s followers, such as Felix Kayser.
Provenance: private collection, Brussels; private collection, Vienna
Lit.: cf. R. J. Fäth, Rudolf Steiner Design. Spiritueller Funktionalismus, Dornach 2005.
