Soumak,
East Caucasus, c. 371 x 245 cm, end of the 19th century, flatweave in soumak technique with hooked cartouches in the medallions, the scattered designs display an abundant reservoir of patterns from the Caucasus, including the figure of a rider, an individual human figure as well as a series of animal abstractions, the date 1854 on the carpet is incorrect and was probably adopted by the weaver directly from their model, ends with knotted fringes, partly exposed warp threads, the heavily corroded brown has been mended several times. (MA)
Lit.: Taher Sabahi, Battenberg Antiquitäten-Kataloge, Orientteppiche, vol. 5: Kelims-Kaukasische Flachgewebe.
