Tapestry, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

Brussels (Netherlands), c. 345 x 326 cm, studio: Martin II Reymbouts, manufactured 1590–1619, important late Renaissance tapestry by one of the leading master workshops of the time with weaver’s mark on the right galloon and Brussels city mark on the lower left, the picture’s surface is almost entirely filled with a large proportion of yellow and green and it is virtually without horizon, it depicts an encampment with war prisoners, although the space is mostly taken up by a scene from the Old Testament, noteworthy is the classical, broad border frame with lavish fruit bundles, putti as well as sitting and standing figures, which can be also found at a later date in South German tapestries, the carpet is wholly preserved and in very good condition, mounted on linen on the back.
