Beauvais (northern France), c. 265 x 486 cm, mid-18th century, large wool and silk tapestry, with a bucolic motif in the foreground against a lush hilly landscape with ruins and an aqueduct, in the centre of the carpet is a wide view skilfully created in the style of the time with the use of foreshortening and a high proportion of silk, this very finely manufactured carpet displays an extraordinarily good state of preservation with only minor repairs, trimmed on both short sides as well as on lower end (with missing border), in Austrian private ownership for the past forty years, kept in an air-conditioned, clean room, mounted on a plate, which is why today the carpet appears free of dust or damage, with soft, smooth feel, entirely backed with new supporting linen on the reverse. (MA)
Lit.: Heinrich Göbel, Wandteppiche, Die Romanischen Länder, volumes 1 and 2; Hermann Schmitz, Bildteppiche, Geschichte der Gobelinwirkerei.
