Jacques François Courtin
(Sens 1672–1752 Paris)
Children making music, with a Moor page,
oil on canvas, 67 x 82 cm, framed
We are grateful to Jean Jacques Petit for confirming this to be a painting by Jacques Francois Courtin.
This cheerful painting is characteristic of the work of Courtin, a student of Louis de Boulogne and one of the most popular genre painters of the Regency. His patrons included the royal family as well as many of the most important collectors in Paris. He was particularly adept at translating genre scenes based on Dutch examples into a contemporary setting through the use of staging and costume. In 1772, Catherine II. of Russia acquired a work by Courtin from the collection of Baron Crozat (Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Inv. No. 2583).
