Paolo Monaldi

Paolo Monaldi - Old Master Paintings

(Rome ca.1709–1780)
Rural scene with horse,
oil on canvas, 56,5 x 47,5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Giancarlo Sestieri for suggesting the attribution of the painting at hand based on a digital photograph.

The present painting is a typical work by Paolo Monaldi, a Roman painter who became best-known for his idyllic village scenes in a rural setting (cf. G. Sestieri, Repertorio della pittura romana della fine del Seicento e del Settecento, I, 1994, Turin, p 130–131). The work shares many similarities with Landscape with village gathering at the Galleria di S. Luca in Rome; in particular with regard to the composition, but also in the leaves, applied with small, closely spaced brushstrokes, as well as in the figure of a seated farmer who resembles the figure to the right of the present painting in his profile, posture, and headdress. The figure to the left leaning against a barrel, recalls the crouching shepherd at the centre of a composition at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore (Inv. No. 37.1858, cf. Italian paintings in the Walters Art Gallery, ed. F. Zeri, 1976, Baltimore, No. 419).
