Having joined the Guild of St Luke at Antwerp, Gillis Congnet travelled to Italy where he visited Naples, Sicily, Terni, and Florence and came to be influenced by the work of Titian. Congnet became famous for his nocturnal scenes. According to Karel van Mander he became very influential in Amsterdam.
