The Prophet Isaiah,
oil on canvas, 118 x 96 cm, framed
This painting of the prophet Isaiah shows a number of similarities to prophet figures in the style of Guercino and may even be based on a work by a master from the Emilia Region. Various sources document the subject in Guercino’s œuvre, e.g. his Libro dei Conti (cf. B. Ghelfi, Il Libro dei conti del Guercino (1629–1666), p 140- 141, No. 399, note. 399), which lists payment for a portrait of the prophet Isaiah. Likewise, an Isaiah is also mentioned in the collection of Cardinal Carlo Barberini between 1692 and 1704, at Palazzo Barberini alle Quattro Fontane. The same subject is also depicted in a drawing published by David Stone (D. Stone, Guercino, Master Draftsman. Works from North American Collections, Bologna 1991, Erg. p 224, No. 184). The present painting of the prophet not only recalls Guercino’s colour scheme, but also his Elijah, fed by Ravens (cf. L. Salerno, I dipinti del Guercino, Rome 1988, p 43, plate 13, p 147, No. 68) as well as the Saints Matthew and Luke kept in Dresden (cf. L. Salerno, ibid, 1988, p 94–95, No. 12, 14).
